FACT: A 40 foot wide marine rail launch will extend 1400 feet (one quarter
mile) into Holmes Harbor, imagine two Space Needles lying end to end
in the harbor. The rail will stand from 3 feet high on the beach to 7
feet high on the mudflats creating visual, recreational and navigational
hazards. Biological Assessment p 9
FACT: No plan exists for marking the rail system for navigational safety.
SEPA Environmental Checklist p 30
FACT: No plan exists for making the rail system safe
for those who frequent the beach. Children could climb on this “attractive nuisance.” Existing
shipbuilders of this size all launch in deep ports and within secure
enclosures.
FACT: No plan exists for maintenance of the rails. The
application does not address who will bear the financial burden of
maintaining or removing
the rails should Nichols eventually relocate or cease to exist.
